Aweil East bans use of polythene bags

By Hou Akot Hou

The commissioner of Aweil East County in Northern Bahr El Gazal state has issued a directive to inform people to avoid selling commodities in polythene bags.

Ding Aher Ngong told this publication on Tuesday that the directive aims at reducing death of livestock, such as goats and cattle, which inhale the bags while grazing.

He stated that the directive will come into effect as the town council in Wanyjok and other markets across the county will be convened by council officials to share the report.

“This is important in the name of protecting our cattle from continuous deaths as we are a cattle-keeping community. We have a high respect for cattle. We sell and do a lot of things with them. And as veterinary officers have shared reports with me about the dangers associated with polythene papers, that is why I gave the directive to stop them,” Diing stated.

Mr. Aher elaborated that the directive will take effect after a month, and those selling goods and providing polythene bags to customers will be fined, as the polythene papers are killing a large number of domestic animals, such as cows and goats, when they inhale them.

“We have given the town council to liaise with the traders to avoid selling the commodities and giving them in polythene bags to the clients or customers,” he disclosed.
